Ingredients

For the Marinade
  • 1 lb beef strips (sirloin or ribeye)
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce combined in marinade
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce (optional) combined in marinade
  • 1 tbsp grated fresh ginger combined in marinade
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced combined in marinade
  • 1 tsp sesame oil combined in marinade
For the Sauce
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce combined in sauce
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce combined in sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar combined in sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch combined in sauce
For Cooking
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil for searing beef
  • 1 large onion, sliced for sautéing
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil for sautéing onions
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Method

Prepare the Steak
  1. In a mixing bowl, add soy sauce, oyster sauce (if using), grated ginger, minced garlic, and sesame oil. Whisk these ingredients together to create a marinade.
  2. Place the beef strips in the bowl, ensuring they are well-coated in the marinade. Let the beef sit in the marinade for about 10-15 minutes.
Cook the Onions
  1. While the beef marinates, heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions to the skillet. Sauté them until they become soft and slightly caramelized, which should take about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Season with salt and pepper to taste, then remove the onions from the pan and set them aside.
Sear the Beef
  1. Using the same skillet, increase the heat to high and add 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil.
  2. Once the oil is hot, add the marinated beef strips. Stir-fry the beef for about 2-3 minutes, or until it is browned and cooked through.
Make the Sauce
  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, and cornstarch.
  2. Pour this sauce over the beef in the skillet and stir well. Allow it to simmer for a few minutes until the sauce thickens.
Combine & Serve
  1. Carefully add the sautéed onions back into the skillet, stirring to combine everything evenly.
  2. Serve the sizzling beef and onions hot over a bed of steamed rice or noodles.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider marinating the beef for 30 minutes to an hour. You can also add bell peppers, broccoli, or snap peas for added color and nutrients.
