Ingredients
  

For the Filling
  • 8 small Granny Smith apples Fresh apples enhance flavor.
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter Adds richness to the filling.
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cup white sugar
  • 0.5 cup packed brown sugar
  • 0.25 cup water
For the Crust
  • 1 (9 inch) double-crust pie pastry Thawed before use.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Gather the ingredients and preheat your oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
  2. Peel, core, and slice the Granny Smith apples into thin slices.
Cooking
  1. In a saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Add the all-purpose flour and stir to form a paste. Cook for 1-2 minutes.
  2. Add white sugar, brown sugar, and water to the saucepan and bring to a boil while stirring. Let it simmer for about 3-5 minutes until it thickens.
  3. Press one pastry sheet into a pie pan for the bottom crust and cut the remaining pastry into 1-inch strips for the top crust.
  4. Arrange the sliced apples in the bottom crust, packing them tightly.
  5. Create a lattice crust using the strips of pastry over the apples.
  6. Pour the sugar-butter mixture over the lattice crust.
  7. Bake for 15 minutes at 425 degrees F, then reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F and bake for an additional 35-45 minutes.
  8. Let cool before serving.

Notes

Serve slices warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Coffee or tea pairs well with it. Store at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
