Ingredients
  

For the Apple Filling
  • 6 cups sliced apples Use a mix of sweet and tart apples.
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon Adds warmth and spice.
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar Halved for apple mixture.
For the Oat Topping
  • 1 cup rolled oats Main component for the topping.
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour Can be substituted with gluten-free flour.
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted Binds the topping ingredients.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar Remaining brown sugar for oat topping.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, add the sliced apples. Sprinkle in the cinnamon and half of the brown sugar, and toss until the apples are well coated.
  3. In another bowl, mix the rolled oats, remaining brown sugar, all-purpose flour, and salt.
  4. Pour the melted butter into the oat mixture and stir until you get a crumbly texture.
Assembly and Baking
  1. Spread the apple mixture evenly across the bottom of a cast iron skillet.
  2. Sprinkle the oat mixture evenly on top of the apples.
  3. Bake for 30-35 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbling.
Serving
  1. Allow the crisp to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy it warm, ideally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven.
